Welcome to ICMP 2018
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I am very happy to welcome all of you to the ISPR Conference on Microbial Photosynthesis, which will be held on the campus of the University of British Columbia August 9-12. This conference is sponsored by the International Society for Photosynthesis Research (ISPR), which also sponsors the International Congress of Photosynthesis Research. The congress recently went from being held once every 3 years to once every 4 years. The ISPR leadership decided that we would create a few ‘regional’ conferences midway in time between the congresses in order to give our members the opportunity to discuss recent results, especially important for our younger scientists. This particular meeting was designed to focus on photosynthesis in unicellular phototrophs, and was timed to follow immediately after the International Symposium on Phototrophic Prokaryotes (ISPP), so that people could take advantage and get ‘two conferences for the price of one’ (or, at least, for less than the price of two).
We have a wonderful line-up of keynote and invited speakers, complemented by a host of speakers chosen from the abstracts. (It was a very difficult job choosing from among the many excellent abstracts we received!) The posters will be up for the whole meeting, and we are doing something innovative on the last last poster session by creating a ‘poster dating’ website to allow people to reserve time to speak with a poster presenter. We hope that people take advantage of this and use the ample time of the sessions to speak with the poster presenters.
Lastly, I hope you take advantage of the beautiful location of the conference and enjoy Vancouver. It is a beautiful city and this is a wonderful time of year to be here.
All the best,
Kevin E. Redding
